Are We Truly Americans?
Tuesday, September 6th, 2011Are we truly America anymore? Can we truly call ourselves Americans? When this country began as a bunch of colonies, the people were rugged individuals many of whom just wanted a better life. And this far away land offered the opportunity. Most who came endured hardship and failed. But they endured. Some did succeed whether moderately or extremely becoming wealthy land owners. They had no government assistance, no free education, no unemployment, and certainly no free medical care. But they had their individual freedom and their dignity. These Colonists were more American than we are today.
Today many of us depend on government to tell us what to do. Every day on the radio you can hear a public service announcement telling you something that should be common sense. We have books of rules and regulations that must be followed. And if you don’t follow them you face legal consequences. Want to start a business? You need a permit and a license and must fill out paperwork for both the state and federal level. Fall on hard times? Just go to the local unemployment office or sign up for welfare. And don’t worry about medical care because Obama took care of that back in 2010.
We used to be a nation that provided for ourselves instead of expecting someone else to provide for us. We were once a self-reliant people that didn’t need to be told how to care for our children or for ourselves. There was a time when we got to keep what we earned, but now if the government thinks you are too wealthy, they just raise your taxes and take it. Obama himself said that he thinks a person reaches a point where they’ve earned enough money. That’s not American. We were once allowed the opportunity to achieve a better life, but now we are denied that because certain politicians and bureaucrats think everyone ought to be guaranteed the same results.
We now are encouraged to celebrate the nationalities of others instead of our own. Illegal immigrants are allowed to go to our schools and work at our jobs without even becoming citizens. We are told to be sensitive to feelings of those from other cultures and made to feel guilty about being Americans.
We were once the land of the free and home of the brave. But with our country sinking deeper and deeper into debt, with a people who expect the state to take care of them, with mountains of taxes and regulations, and with a government that no longer knows its place we are quickly losing that. The United States represents the Byzantine Empire more than the original thirteen colonies that just wanted to be left alone to govern themselves and decide their own destiny. We are quickly losing our identity as Americans as we move toward being the land of the slaves and home of the cowards.
We need to decide for ourselves if we are still Americans: strong, independent, free, and peaceful. Will we retain our identity as a free people to govern ourselves and live our own lives? Or will we choose to become Europe and lose what liberty we have left?
